Lynn Woolsey’s official site carries a poll asking constituents “What is the most important issue facing America today?” The four choices available are: Health Care; Jobs/Economy; National Security; Energy/Environment. These are undeniably four important areas of concern for our nation. But, predictably, our selective and in-denial representative has “forgotten” to include another very vital issue: Reducing Government Spending!
By her omission, Rep. Woolsey again demonstrates her inability to grapple with the necessity our country faces: we MUST cut government spending. Congress MUST make the hard choices and reduce both spending in all sectors (including military, as Defense Secretary Gates has just proposed and as Rep. John Campbell — a California Republican — has upped the ante for even deeper military spending cuts). Rep. Woolsey needs to get her head out of the sand and face up to this need. There is no doubt that she would approve defense cutbacks, but would she do the right thing and begin voting for budget cuts in domestic programs too? I don’t think we should hold our breath.
Reducing federal spending isn’t something a member of Congress should leave off a list of top priorities in 2011. Congresswoman Woolsey’s staff: please change the poll to include it.
